VH1 Rock Docs: Bling’d: Blood, Diamonds, and Hip Hop A VH1 Special Lessons for High School Social Studies Classes Diamond’s New Four C’s (Conflict, Civil War, Certification and Canada) Lesson 2 Objectives •Students will know the locations of the major diamond mines in the world. •Students will be able to list at least three major conflicts occurring in those locations. •Students will select one area from that list to learn an in depth history of the conflict. •Students will read the major summary of the Kimberly process and be able to list the strengths and weak- nesses of this agreement. • Upon finishing the video, students will be able to understand the connection between the civil wars in Africa, the diamond trade and the Kimberly process of certification. Materials •Videotape of VH1’s Bling’d: Blood, Diamonds, and Hip Hop •Television and VCR •Internet access for this lesson and handouts. Prior Knowledge and Experience Students should be told that the four factors that are considered when judging a diamond’s quality and cost are: the diamond’s color, its clarity, diamond cut, and carat weight. These are normally referred to as the four C’s. Procedures • This lessons is suitable for use after watching the VH1 video Bling’d: Blood, Diamonds, and Hip Hop • Have students read a summary history of Blood Diamond conflicts here: http://cnnstudentnews.cnn. com/2001/fyi/news/11/22/diamond.history/ (students should note this is a 2001 article).
