Content Inside: Talking Fashion: A completely different language for Hispanics Published Newsday 21 st December 2005 Low-rise jeans glitter open necked shirts and imported hip-huggers found on a Thursday night in a Chaguaramas nightclub makes way for the fine ruffles of flamenco dancers with the sound- systems brief silence heralding the start of salsa night. Fashion especially Latin American fashion reflects a people and is recorded in the ruffles sequins and flair of the Hispanic persona. Though fashion is synonymous with clothing it encompasses everything from shoes and jewellery to hairstyles and handbags. Perhaps no other culture understands this better than the Hispanic a culture that is gradually gaining greater influence on our very own society. In the Spanish-speaking world a persons dress is often seen as an indication of their personality and status. While this may be true of our Trinbagonian society some believe we tend to dress to impress only on special occasions. Although clothing does not make the person Hispanics have an inherent sense of pride and dignity that they reveal through their appearance. A possible reason for the care Hispanic people place on their appearance could be the fact that most countries of the Spanish-speaking world have either regional or national costumes. These are quite often mirrors reflecting the climate and history of the particular region. In Panama the pollera was once the apparel of female slaves and nursemaids during the Spanish colonial era. Now evolved over the years to become the typical dress for Panamanian women it is a symbol of national pride worn by women of all social and economic classes. The pollera finds itself in every-day wear formal occasions and even in weddings. Our neighbour Venezuela has a unique national costume.
