Content Inside: STUDENTS GET IN TO IT THROUGH INTUIT OROZCO ELEMENTARY EDWARD PINO, ART TEACHER JERRY STEFL, VISITING ARTIST FROM INTUIT- THE CENTER FOR INTUITIVE AND OUTSIDER ARTS DESCRIPTION In this lesson students will explore the process of wood carving through investigating the characteristics of William Dawson. The student will carve the wood to resemble a person close to him/her, an animal, or an environment that is significant to their personal histories. Students will then finish the piece by painting the carving with acrylic paint and adding found objects where necessary. Objectives Students will: Demonstrate concepts of found objects, painting, and wood carving and cutting techniques through the creation of a self-supportive wooden piece in Dawson’s style. 27.B.2: Identify and describe how the arts communicate the similarities and differences among various people, places and times. Demonstrate individuality through the choice of their personal themes for their carving. 26.B.2d: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching and constructing. Motivational/Anticipatory Set After experiencing the work of William Dawson through visits to Intuit, the students will review and discuss his work by viewing a PowerPoint presentation. Discussion questions: -What features on Dawson’s figurative work is distinctive? What about his animal sculptures? Are there similarities in the method of carving? Painting? -What do you notice about the different environments that Dawson created? -How does Dawson incorporate paint and sculpture together to personalize his work? -What kind of subject matter did he choose? Did his work reflect popular culture? -What is popular culture?
