Recycling? It started with the kids. "Only you can prevent forest fires?" Kids. "Give a hoot, dont pollute?" Yep. Kids once again. Marketing experts learned long ago that children are probably the most powerful motivating force in influencing a parents purchasing decision. Dont believe us? Just ask Disney. But corporate strategies aside, educating children as a means to affect social change is a powerful and dramatic force in our lives. That is likely because it is the child who generally has no preconceived biases towards a particular point of view. They simply arent as stuck in their ways as the rest of us adults are. Thats why weve seen time and time again that societal social change begins most effectively with the young. Teach them to recycle as children - and theyll recycle when they are grown-ups. Teach them not to smoke in the third grade - and they are 71 percent more likely to not smoke in college. Once kids "get it," they have an astounding impact on their parents.
